VoIP pioneer Jeff Pulver just
resigned from Pulvermedia — that’s right, a media company that bears his very name.
That got me thinking about how personal media outlets keep increasing in value, even getting whole media companies built around them. Will we come to a point where personal blogs become so big that they become media companies? As corporate interests become more complicated, could more people be forced to resign from media companies bearing their very names?
It happened to Steve Gillmor (albeit temporarily) with the
Gillmor Gang. Could the Ninja someday be forced to resign from
Ask a Ninja? Could Om Malik someday be forced to resign from
GigaOM? Could Robert Scoble someday be forced to resign from
Scobleizer? Could Christine Gambito someday be forced to resign from
Happy Slip Productions? Could Marina someday be forced to resign from
Hot For Words? Could I someday be forced to resign from
The Mike Abundo Effect?
Granted, having your personal brand grow to a point where it could force you out is a high-quality problem to have, but it’s a problem more of us might have as the Web allows more personal brands to grow into media businesses. How should we mitigate that risk while building our little personal media empires?
