    iPHONE!
Like the Wall Street Journal’s Walt Mossberg, the NY Times’ David Pogue (Macworld emeritus, no less) is on The List — the special group of people who get the latest Apple gear before anyone else. And David’s just posted his own review of the iPhone. Like Walt, he’s quite impressed, but with reservations:

[M]uch of the hype and some of the criticisms are justified. The iPhone is revolutionary; it’s flawed. It’s substance; it’s style. It does things no phone has ever done before; it lacks features found even on the most basic phones.
On the good side are the iPhone’s sleek design, scratch-resistance, stellar interface, easy-to-use applications, and impressive Web browsing. Perhaps most notable, the iPhone’s visual interface is not only effective, but “makes the phone fun to use, which is not something you can say about most cellphones.” Most? How about any?

On the other hand, David notes that actions such as making a call require more steps than on most phones, call quality — thanks to AT&T’s network — is only average, AT&T’s EDGE network is “excruciatingly slow,” and the iPhone is missing basic features found on many other phones such as chat, MMS, and voice-dialing. And unlike Walt over at the Journal, David wasn’t too impressed by the iPhone’s virtual keyboard:

Then there’s the small matter of typing. Tapping the skinny little virtual keys on the screen is frustrating, especially at first…once you stop stressing about each individual letter and just plow ahead, speed and accuracy pick up considerably. Even so, text entry is not the iPhone’s strong suit. The BlackBerry won’t be going away anytime soon.

Personally, I like the LG Shine the best. The iPhone is cool, but when I try to type things my fingers always press the wrong buttons and stuff like that.
