Unlocking an ATT phone?

If I unlock an ATT phone, and put my T-Mobile SIM card in the ATT phone, will I still be able to put my SIM card back into my T-Mobile phone and use it?
I'm not stealing phones. I have never tried it, and I have an old ATT phone that I bought (not stealing) I would like to take for when I don't want to have to worry about my BB.
