There is no chance of that happening as long as you plug it in correctly. It only happens and makes the battery get hot when the USER forces the plug into the charging slot backwards (Just like hooking up the jumper cables on a car backwards, same thing happens). With the screen of the phone facing up then on the charging plug there is an embossed arrow and the arrow should be face up as well and should be pointing towards the phone. The phone is a piece of junk though and it has failed to meet AT&T minimum performance standards and they have pulled all inventory from all sales channels and have stopped selling or replacing it. If you call the Warranty Dept at 1-800-801-1101 they will offer you a Samsung Propel or a Pantech Matrix

    Um... it catches on fire?

That's definantly a manufacturer's defect, and it should be returned to the manufacturer for a replacement.
