my wireless ATT contract is over in December and plans to switch to Verizon?

Dec. 15th is complete my 2 year contract with AT&T and I want to switch to Verizon wireless
I don't want to get charged both company overlap. so my question is WHEN should I call Verizon wireless, after Dec. 15 or before?
on top of that I need to KEEP my old number the same.
