If I sold my old iPhone to another ATT friend, will he be able to use it?

I want to sell my iPhone to my roommate and i was wondering if he can use it. I plan to buy the 3G iPhone as soon as it comes out and I have no use for the old one.

He has an old RAZR and he has been an AT&T customer for quite a while. I thought that we could just switch the SIM cards and then be good to go. Somewhere I read that iPhones wont work on another SIM card other than the one it was activated with.
