How do i know which signal is which on ATT wireless phone?

I bought a lg vu. Sometimes my phone has a small satelite or tower or something next to my signal strenth.Basically, It is an upside down triangle with a line extending down from it. Sometimes it has an e in a box. What does each mean? It only lets me call people when i have the e in the box but i was told i should be able to call people with the tower next to my signal strength as well, I have 3 bars.
