Do I need to purchase a data plan if I am ordering a Blackjack II phone from ATT

or can I stay w/family plan? I am eligible for a free upgrade with a new 2 year renewal of my contract and I like the new blackjack ii but I do not want to add the expensive 30$ data plan, can I stay with regular plan or will the phone not work properly?
I am not buying for internet persay, I just like they way it looks. Will it work with regular voice plan? Will the gps feature work?
