How does an AT&T mobile phone with International Capabilities work?

When I go to Germany Will I have to use an temporary German number or will I keep my Regular Number?

Do I have to sign up for a International plan?

If I do have to sign up for a plan is there a temporary I can use while there and drop when I get back to the States?
