Why don't new Operating Systems work?

Recently, I have tried using both the PCLinuxOS and Mandriva operating systems on my Compaq Presario F756NR with AMD Turion 64 x2 Processor, but, after downloading, burning, and rebooting, I get little more than a command line prompt and the words "can't access tty: job control turned off". Ideas?

Your system probably can't support it, or you downloaded the wrong ISO for your CPU.

My 2 cents (use Linux sometimes)
