What are the current styles of dress/attitude in Japan?

Just out of interest, what are the styles like in Japan? I know that the way I'm wording this question is somewhat unclear, so here's an example:
Question - What are the current styles of dress/attitude in the USA?

    Answer - Hip-hop/urban, emo/scene, skater, gangster

    For teenager style there?

There is no outrageous and/or extraordinary trend in fashion because the generation is no more main stream in Japanese pop industry. Mostly very conservative and traditional. Some exception are still there though.

"Gal" fashion (e.g. CECIL McBEE), Gothic and Rorita (ATELIER-PIERROT), Natural (SM2), Conservative (ANAYI), Casual (GAP, Mujirushi)

This economic downturn has increased the popularity of cheap-chic brands, including UNIQLO, GAP and Mujirushi, so casual fashion is dominant.

Oh, well there are lotsa different types, as of course, they're are lotsa different people with different personalities/ styles etc.. etc..I'm mainly familiar and know about teen girls.

Many teens are influenced by American styles. This style that is most closest with mainstream american fashions is called "Ageha" (which means high-maintenance and snobby (probably a Japanese colloquialism)) or also "Gyaru". (which is a Japanese transliteration of "Gal") This is the most current and popular fashion for teens girls I can think of at the time. There are TONS of magazines that help girls with obtaining this fashion sense. I would most likely categorize it with an American version of like Paris Hilton and Hollywood-types.

    And also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyaru

Below is an amazing link to someone who has actually been to Japan and gives an obscene and extremely informative amount of detail, covering a broad range of fashions from very popular to more unknown. It seems a little dated (a few years ago or more), but you get a good general idea.

    http://www.ringsurf.com/online/1560-japanese_fashion.html

I could list each of them, but this list would be impossibly long.

There is also Punk, gothic lolita, wa-lolita and many others that are featured in Kera magazine. There are many bizarre, cool styles and I really like the magazine. They also feature and interview many Visual Kei artists and talk to teens around Japan (even the world sometimes) on their fashion styles and tips. Personally, I adore the sweet lolita fashion the most.

Overall, the one thing Japanese women and teenage girls need or is extremely common is platforms and clothing labels!

I'm not so sure about guys, I'm sorry. For more popular styles with guys, it's probably like America too, but i could be wrong. I know with the more subculture styles (like punk, gothic and Visual-Kei-esque fashions) guys are influenced by their favorite Visual Kei bands..

And knowing the current economic situation, people are looking for cost-effective ways to still be fashionable. Magazines (like Kera in particular) point out cheaper ways to be cool and get the same type look for less. Many gothic lolita style dresses can easily be over $200, for USED ONES!! But, you have to remember most Japanese youths wear school uniforms, and can only really wear what they want on the weekend, so splurging on expensive clothes isn't such a big deal. Regardless, teens are trying to deal and spend money more wisely.

Hope you get a good idea! ^^
