before 20th century? Modern life is bombarded by mass media and information, often distorting what is real and what is not. It also shrouds the purpose of life and makes people want instant gratification. More psychiatric diseases are produced by modern living. People who live in big metropolis areas are said to be the loneliest people on earth despite the fact there are so many inhabitants living closely together. As you know booming cities are one pinnacle feature of modern civilizations. In that sense, would you want to live in a simpler time when there were no such thing as the internet or even telephone or automobile, etc?
