David Ash’s season has come to an end.
The Longhorns’ former starting quarterback is still dealing with symptoms from a concussion he suffered more than two months ago and has decided to work toward getting ready for spring football.
"David has been treated and evaluated by our medical staff daily for a recurrence of concussion symptoms and also visited with and received feedback from specialists,” Texas head athletic trainer Kenny Boyd said in a statement released by the school. “Though he's made a lot of progress, we have not been able to clear him to return to competition. Due to the duration of symptoms, we are now at a point that we all believe the best approach for him is to not return this season.”
Ash sufferedthe injury during the fourth quarter against BYU on Sept. 7. He took a shot to the head during a called running play and struggled to get up. During the game, Ash ran the ball 16 times, was hit a handful of times and was sacked three times. He's played in just one game since.
Case McCoy has been the Longhorns’ starter in Ash’s stead and will continue to do so moving forward against TCU, Baylor and the bowl game.

Texas anticipates Ash will have ample time to heal during the next couple months and be ready to participate fully in spring practices.
“We've visited with David and his family and are all in agreement on his not returning to action as the best next step in his recovery,” Boyd said. “We will continue to treat him and watch his progress closely and expect this will allow him ample time to return to full health and participation for the spring season."
