In the pantheon of bad ideas by high school sports reporters, this stunt by David Amador has to be near the top.
As noted by The Big Lead, Amador publishes High School Sports Magazine, a Texas production that covers high school sports across the state (like The Old Coach, it’s a strong prep publication). On the opening weekend of the Texas football playoffs, Amador traveled to Harlingen, Texas to take in Harlingen’s opening round game against Memorial High (McAllen, Texas).
What happened next was either crazy, hilarious or perhaps both. In a preview shot, Amador begins with a close up of the inflated helmet through which Harlingen players are expected to run. Standing less than 10 feet away, he shows the players entering the giant Cardinals helmet, watches as smoke is set off inside the helmet and then continues to watch on as the stampede of players hits the field.
For some reason, Amador refused to move. He stood still as the Harlingen players ran him over like a semi. By the end of the video, Amador was flat on his back while the camera continued to capture footage upside down.
Don't worry, Amador was fine. In fact, he even seemed to get a little rush from the contact.
While there are plenty of reasons to question Amador’s logic, no one can doubt his commitment or passion. Given that Harlingen topped Memorial, 58-20, the Cardinals might want to keep him around, too.
