Devonte Fields much-anticipated sophomore season – a season that never really got started – is over.
According to to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fields will undergo surgery on his broken foot and miss the rest of the season. He plans to seek a medical redshirt.
After serving a one-game suspension in the season opener against LSU for a violation of team rules and playing just a quarter the following weekend against Southeastern Louisiana, Fields finally got some meaningful playing time against Texas Tech on Sept. 12. However, he suffered the broken foot during the contest and hasn’t stepped on the field since. During that game, he had three tackles.
Fields came into the year as one of the nation’s best defenders following a freshman campaign that saw him make 53 tackles, 18.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks. He was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and first-team all-conference.
Normally, one would classify this as a huge hit for the Horned Frogs, but since Fields had played so sparingly this season anyway, the team has already adjusted to life without him.Next year, however, Field should be a nice addition to the depth the Horned Frogs are currently building.
