Brett Lawrie’s days with the White Sox are reportedly numbered. (AP) Welcome to The Stew’s Spring Headlines, our daily look at the biggest MLB stories and news*items from*around*spring training. Here you’ll find a quick recap of all the day’s action and other fun stuff from around the internet that we think is worth your time.
HE GONE: The Chicago White Sox have requested release waivers on veteran infielder Brett Lawrie, with the intention of granting him his unconditional release. Once that request goes through, Lawrie’s brief and disappointing stint will be mercifully over.
In just 94 games last season, he hit .248/.310/.413 with 12 homers and 36 RBIs. He was limited by injuries then, and he’s yet to take the field this spring due to recurring leg soreness.

The decision to grant Lawrie his release is likely a combination of the White Sox losing patience and looking to open up second base for the impending arrival of Yoan Moncada. The top prospect could still have an outside shot at the opening day roster. If that’s not in the cards, manager Rick Renteria can slide Tyler Saladino or Yolmer Sanchez in that role temporarily.
Lawrie had signed a $3.5 million contract in December to avoid arbitration. He should land another opportunity soon, provided he gets healthy. But he’ll likely have to settle for less money. [CSNHayes]
GOOD NEWS: After receiving a second opinion on his elbow, David Price has learned he will not require surgery. That news allowed the Red Sox to breathe a sigh of relief for the first time since Wednesday. Price will be rested for seven-to-10 days, at which point he’ll be evaluated again. But the key point is that his elbow is structurally sound. [The Stew]
MRI ALERT: Angels closer Huston Street was forced from Friday’s spring outing with what the team is calling triceps irritation. He was set for an MRI late Friday and the team should have a better idea on his status come Saturday. [@Angels]
HE’S BACK: Adrian Beltre was back in the Rangers’ lineup on Friday after missing 2 1/2 weeks with a calf injury. Beltre went hitless in two at-bats, but barring a setback should allow him to play for the Dominican Republic in Round 1 of the World Baseball Classic.*[@Evan_P_Grant]
PIRATES STATEMENT: On Thursday, we learned that Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang received an eight-month suspended sentence stemming from his third DUI arrest.
On Friday, team president Frank Coonelly released the following statement concerning Kang’s status and potential punishment from the team. [MLB.com]
“Now that Jung Ho’s legal case in Korea has concluded, we will continue to work with him and his representatives in an effort to secure his work visa so that he may resume his career as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates. We look forward to meeting with Jung Ho as soon as he is able to travel to the United States and having a serious discussion with him on this issue and how he has and will change those behaviors that led to the very serious punishment that has been levied against him in Korea.
We will withhold judgment on what Club discipline, if any, is appropriate until we have had an opportunity to have that discussion. We will also withhold from further comment until we have an opportunity to meet with Jung Ho. Regardless of our decision on the disciplinary issue, we will do everything that we can as an organization to assist Jung Ho as he works to change his behavior and grow into the man that we know he can be.”
