BIRD IS THE WORD: He’s the owner of a famous cat’s grandson, and he’s also the starting first baseman for the New York Yankees. Manager Joe Girardi officially named Greg Bird his starter on Wednesday after Bird’s huge spring made it the only possible decision. Coming back from labrum surgery that ruined his 2016 season Bird is batting .421 with four homers and a 1.447 OPS over 16 games this spring. He gets the nod over free agent signee Chris Carter, who will now battle Matt Holliday for at-bats at designated hitter. [@AndrewMarchand]

HE’S THE MAN: Carlos Martinez has been named the opening day starter for the St. Louis Cardinals. He gets the nod over Adam Wainwright, who had started the previous four opening days for manager Mike Matheny. Martinez posted a 3.04 ERA over 195 1/3 innings last season. [@dgoold]
BEST ARMS AVAILABLE: Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports the White Sox are being patient in terms of finding a good trade fit for left-hander Jose Quintana. It’s also*noted that Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Junior Guerra is the next best available arm on the trade market, which could help the White Sox cause. [Yahoo Sports]
HE’S DONE: Veteran outfielder David DeJesus announced his retirement on Wednesday. He also announced he’ll be joining the Comcast Sportsnet Chicago studio team for the upcoming baseball season. DeJesus, 37, played 13 years in MLB. He spent time with the Royals, A’s, Cubs, Nationals and Rays, and posting a .275/.349/.412 batting line to go along with 99 career homers.*[@David_DeJesus3]

JOBA IS CUT: The Brewers have released Joba Chamberlain. The veteran reliever seemed like a good bet to make Milwaukee’s bullpen this spring, but managed only two strikeouts over eight innings, while walking five and allowing ten hits. Someone will probably call, but he won’t receive more than a minor league offer. [MLB Trade Rumors]
