South Florida athletic director Doug Woolard will retire at the end of his current contract, which expires on June 30, 2015.
According to a release from the school, Woolard "will fulfill his current contract and complete several strategically important development projects, as well as assist in a succession plan and in the transition of a new director of athletics."
USF said that a search for a new athletic director would begin immediately. In reporting Woolard's departure, ESPN cited sources that said South Florida was dissatisfied with the performance of its football and men's basketball teams.
From ESPN:
The decision to replace Woolard of his duties was because of "wide-ranging dissatisfaction" with the Bulls football and men's basketball programs, according to sources.
Woolard has been South Florida's athletic director since 2004. He was given a three-year extension in 2012.
South Florida's football program has struggled mightily since going 8-4 in 2010, Skip Holtz's first year with the program. In the last three seasons the Bulls are 10-26.
Holtz was fired after the 2012 season and replaced by Willie Taggart, who was previously at Western Kentucky. But in Taggart's first season, South Florida regressed from the 3-9 record it posted in Holtz's last year to 2-10 in 2013.
South Florida lost to FCS school McNeese State by 32 in its 2013 season opener and finished the year averaging just 13.8 points per game. Only Massachusetts, Miami (OH) and Florida International scored fewer per contest.
Attendance at football games has also dropped by more than half since 2007 to just over 20,000 per game this season. South Florida plays at Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

South Florida's basketball team is 10-7 this season and 1-3 in the American Athletic Conference. In the past three seasons it has an overall record of 44-56 and 18-36 in the Big East. In 2011-12, South Florida made the third round of the NCAA Tournament by beating California and Temple before losing to Ohio.
In November, Woolard's tires were slashed while he was attending South Florida's game at Central Florida. After discovering the vandalism, he drove home to Tampa, Fl. in a courtesy car from an Orlando, Fl. dealership.
