Mitch Marner sets up Morgan Rielly (NHL.com) Mitch Marner put on quite the show against the Bruins Monday night.
The Maple Leafs rookie made a pair of highlight-reel plays leading to Morgan Rielly’s first-period goal. He started the sequence by taking a pass from James van Riemsdyk and spinning off Ryan Spooner in front only to be denied by the toe of Tuukka Rask.

Seconds later, Marner picked up a loose puck and flicked a ridiculous backhand saucer pass to a streaking Rielly, who beat Rask to tie the game 1-1.

Marner came close to making more magic in the second period, using his agility to buy himself time and draw in a pair of defenders before dishing off to van Riemsdyk, who set up Matt Hunwick for a glorious scoring chance.

He was up to his old tricks (new tricks?) again in the third, beating the slightly larger Zdeno Chara in a puck battle and setting up van Riemsdyk with a spinning backhand pass that he fired wide.

With his helper on Rielly’s goal, Marner increased his freshman-leading assist total to 39, one back of the Maple Leafs rookie record held by Gus Bodnar, who tallied 40 points during his inaugural 1943-44 season.
