During Wednesday's Cubs-Reds game at the Great American Ballpark —*which Chicago won going away, 9-4*— a Reds fan made a remarkable and barehanded snag of a line drive foul ball, and did so while holding his young son in his other arm.
That officially makes it remarkable and memorable.
The great catch happened in the third inning with Reds slugger Joey Votto at the plate. That alone should give you an idea of how well the baseball was hit, because Votto rarely gets cheated and on even rarer occasions hits soft pop flys. On this pitch, Votto was actually very late on a fastball, but still got a good piece of it, lining it foul deep into the seats behind the Reds dugout. That's where our fan was waiting, and with his son secured tightly in his right arm, he reached up casually and calmly to snatch the liner with his bare left hand.
Nope. No glove required for this guy. Heck, he didn't even need pine tar to help secure his grip. He just needed his reflexes, his instincts as a former college baseball player and his big mitt of a left hand.
Honestly, though, it's pretty amazing that he didn't bobble the baseball or his child under the circumstances. A lot could have gone wrong if the latter had happened, but there was no bobble and absolutely no panic. That only adds to the greatness of the play.*
The bar has been significantly raised for fan catches. Good luck topping that one, folks.
