Penn State coach Bill O'Brien is set to interview with the Houston Texans for their head coaching vacancy, per NFL Network.
O'Brien has been at Penn State for two years after he was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. According to NFL Network's Ian Rappoport, the interview is scheduled for after Christmas -- meaning it could have already taken place.
Earlier this year, O'Brien's buyout for an NFL job was reduced from $13 million to $6.5 million. That's certainly a number much more palatable to NFL teams.
In the midst of the sanctions from the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal, O'Brien's Nittany Lions teams have gone 8-4 and 7-5 in his two seasons at the school. Because of the sanctions, the Nittany Lions are ineligible for a bowl.
O'Brien was mentioned as a candidate during the NFL coaching rumor mill after the 2012 season -- when he was named the AP's coach of the year -- but said that he wasn't a one-and-done guy. Does that sentiment change after two seasons? An interview would not be scheduled unless there was strong mutual interest. Plus, the Texans could have the top overall pick and are just one year removed from a playoff appearance.
