In today's world, it seems impossible for a professional athlete to go anywhere incognito. However, Baltimore Orioles reliever Tommy Hunter was able to pull it off fairly successfully recently when he went undercover as "salesman Ray" at the Orioles official team store in York, Pennsylvania.
Hunter's goals for this venture were obvious:
1) He wanted to surprise as many Orioles fans as possible.
2) He wanted to push and sell as many Tommy Hunter jerseys as possible.
For the first 90 seconds of the video anyway, Hunter went undetected, which in some ways actually isn't surprising. For the most part relievers fly under the radar, with the exception being when they're struggling and fans wish for them to disappear all together. With that said, Hunter did have a five-week stint as Orioles closer in 2014, so he was thrust into the spotlight a little more often, and fairly recently.*
Eventually, a few of the more diehard Orioles fans showed up and called him out. One lady in particular knew exactly who Hunter was and immediately identified him. Of course, he denied it initially, but when he eventually came clean, she gave him the old "yeah, big deal" reaction, which is pretty much the highlight of the video.
As for his salesmanship skills, well, Hunter's not a true closer there either apparently. A few Hunter jerseys came off the rack, but they always went right back without a bite.
Manny Machado he isn't in the eyes O's fans, but he's a good sport and it looks like everyone enjoyed meeting him.*
