Dan Orlovsky …
You thought about him running out of the back of the end zone when you saw his name, didn’t you? When Orlovsky was with the Detroit Lions, he ran out of the back of the end zone, oblivious that he stepped out of bounds and took a safety. That happened in 2008, and became the play that summed up the 0-16 Lions. It’s also a play that will never, ever leave Orlovsky. He’ll be known for that blooper forever.
At least Cody Kessler pulled an Orlovsky in a preseason game. We’ll all forget it soon enough. But it was pretty funny.
Kessler, a quarterback who was a third-round pick of the Cleveland Browns out of USC, ran out of the back of his end zone for a safety on Friday night. It was just like Orlovsky; he rolled right and just lost track of where he was. Kessler also threw a touchdown on his first NFL pass, a 10-yard strike to fellow rookie Rashard Higgins. Kessler also took a second safety late in the fourth quarter when he was sacked in his own end zone. Let’s just say it was a mixed bag for his pro debut.
Kessler had a moment to remember and some to forget, but at least he learned an important lesson: Always know where the end zone ends.
