Score and situation: The Arizona Diamondbacks staved off elimination in the first home game of their NLDS with an 8-1 win against the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night. The D-Backs lost the first two games of the best-of-five series at Miller Park, and trail 2-1 going into Wednesday's Game 4.

Leading lads: Paul Goldschmidt drove in five runs for Arizona, four of them coming on a grand slam off Shaun Marcum in the fifth inning. That was more than enough support for Josh Collmenter, who held a previously potent Brewers lineup to only two hits over seven innings.

Head hangers: Marcum was rocked for seven runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. Going back to the regular season, he's allowed five or more runs in four of his past five starts. The middle of the Brewers' batting order — Ryan Braun, Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks — provided no help, hitting a combined 1-for-10.

Key play: Miguel Montero's double to deep center field in the first inning — which would've been a home run in some ballparks — scored Willie Bloomquist to give the D-Backs a 1-0 lead. It was the first lead Arizona had taken in the series.

Interesting stat: Including two regular season starts, Collmenter has allowed only one run in 21 innings against the Brewers. Corey Hart's third-inning homer is the only run Milwaukee has scored versus the rookie hurler.

What they'll be talking about: D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson caught flack for not intentionally walking Fielder in Game 1 before he hit a two-run homer. Brewers skipper Ron Roenicke might get some criticism for telling Marcum to put Montero — who had already driven in two runs — on base in the fifth inning. That loaded the bases, setting up Goldschmidt's killer grand slam.

What's next: The D-Backs try to force a decisive Game 5 with a win Wednesday night. Joe Saunders pitches for Arizona, while Randy Wolf gets the start for Milwaukee.
