We've heard of pitchers beating themselves up after a tough inning on the mound. Usually it's metaphor. But New York Mets relief pitcher Carlos Torres actually beat himself up after giving up four runs in the 13th inning Thursday, handing a 5-1 win*to the Milwaukee Brewers.
After he was pulled from the game, Torres sat on the Mets bench and began punching himself in the head. Ummm, ouch?
It was a rather ugly outing for Torres, so we understand his frustration. He got out of the 12th inning unscathed on the scoreboard despite giving up two hits. Then in the 13th, the game deadlocked 1-1, he surrendered five more hits without getting an out and was charged with four runs. The carnage included the go-ahead homer by Jonathan Lucroy.
Torres punching himself in the head has an opportunity to be the Mets' lasting images of 2014. Knowing their luck, don't be surprised if Torres also ends up on the disabled list with a self-inflicted concussion.
