New Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin is bringing in a young, up-and-coming coach to run his offense.
The Terps announced Sunday that Walt Bell has been named the team’s offensive coordinator. Bell, 31, spent the past two seasons overseeing Arkansas State’s high-powered unit while also serving as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.
“Walt is one of the brightest offensive minds in college football and I’m excited to have him on my staff,” Durkin said in a release. “He has a track record of being part of some of the most potent offenses in college football and he’s going to bring that exciting brand of football to Maryland.”
Under Bell’s tutelage, Arkansas State broke five school records in 2014 while averaging 476.5 yards and 36.2 points per game. This season, the Red Wolves averaged 40 points and 438 yards per game.
Before his time at Arkansas State, Bell had stints as an offensive assistant at North Carolina, Southern Miss, Oklahoma State and Memphis. He played collegiately at Middle Tennessee State where he was a wide receiver.
Durkin, who was hired earlier this month after spending the season as Michigan’s defensive coordinator, still has several spots on his coaching staff to fill. In addition to Bell, he brought in former Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer as defensive coordinator, former Virginia head coach Mike London as defensive line coach and former Alabama assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim as defensive backs coach.
Maryland was 3-9 this season.
