Martin Kaymer found himself in a spot of bother on Saturday at the RBC Heritage.
The two-time major champion was partially stymied behind a tree on the surprisingly difficult par-4 ninth hole at Harbour Town Golf Links, needing to find a creative way to get his second shot on the green. Not coming up with a solution otherwise, Kaymer spotted the fan grandstands to the right of the green and decided to try something a little different.
Kaymer hits his shot, trying to ricochet the ball off the grandstands and, ideally, on to the green. The German pulls off the ricochet, but the unpredictable bounce off the metal-and-plywood structure didn’t work out in his favor. Instead, the ball bounded into the greenside bunker.
Kaymer did get up-and-down for par from the bunker, so the strategy worked out at least against par. In the end, Kaymer shot 3-over 74 to fall 10 strokes behind the lead heading into Sunday’s final round.
