Even though he resigned as head football coach at Texas at the end of last season, Mack Brown is still seen around Texas’ campus pretty frequently.
Over the weekend, Brown was asked to deliver the commencement address at the University of Texas School of Government. Brown is a great speaker and had plenty of anecdotes to provide to the graduates.
As his speech went on, Brown began to talk about the 2005 national championship. Understandably, he was anxious before the game. As he thought about what he would say to his team in the locker room, Brown flipped through the channels and came across the Jerry Springer Show.
He said he watched three half-hour episodes of Springer, which then inspired what he told his team before the game. Brown told his players about watching the show, and told them to never go on the show if asked by their significant other.
The team laughed, removing the tension in the room.
(The story starts around the 18:30 mark)

Brown then related what he told his team back in ’05 to the graduates in the room.
“They laughed and I said ‘that’s right. We’re supposed to have fun. We worked hard to get here.’ Just like today,” Brown said. “You’ve worked so hard to get in here so don’t be worried about tomorrow. Don’t be anxious about what’s not going to happen in your life. Don’t listen to all these people who tell you there aren’t any jobs out there for you. Be proud and enjoy the moment because you don’t have this day again.”
