Photo by Harry How/Getty Images Kris Versteeg is back on the unrestricted free agent market after failing his physical with Swiss side SC Bern.
The 30-year-old Versteeg signed a one-year deal with Bern in July following a 2015-16 NHL season where he split time between the Los Angeles Kings and Carolina Hurricanes.
TSN’s Darren Dreger reported on Sunday that Versteeg would be parting with Bern after “insurance complications.” He noted the forward had hip surgery four years ago, which could have played a role in failing to land full coverage for the upcoming season.
On their website announcing the news, Bern claim they were unaware of Versteeg’s medical history prior to his signing.
“We would have loved to have Kris with us, he is a great player and a great guy. But the situation is now as it is,” said Bern sporting director Alex Chatelain.

Now that he’s a UFA again, and NHL training camps are on the horizon, it probably won’t be long for Versteeg to catch on with another side. Teams will be needing bodies while players are at the World Cup and you can never have enough depth and lottery tickets during preseason.
