A teammate on the Washington Nationals said he has seen Kevin Frandsen practice the play he made in the bottom of the third inning Tuesday night. Frandsen denies it — but is he just trying to be humble?
An infielder by trade, Frandsen made a freaky, no-look, behind-the-back catch from a carom off the fence while playing left field. Frandsen's play on a double by Jason Castro was slick enough to keep a runner at third base and stop the Astros from scoring — momentarily, anyhow. Castro's drive missed landing in the Crawford Boxes for a home run by just a few feet, instead hitting the edge of the grandstand, which juts out in left-center at Minute Maid Park. It's one of the tougher areas to field in the majors because it's hard to know how which way the ball will go when it bounces. But Frandsen, filling in while Bryce Harper is on the disabled list, was in the right place at the right time and made the play look ridiculously easy. Like a boss, as the kids say.
Via the Associated Press, Frandsen refused to brag:
He said he simply got lucky on the play and shared what he told his teammates when they asked how he did it.
''You stick your glove out and maybe some things go in there,'' he said with a laugh.
Because no good deed goes unpunished, Astros rookie George Springer followed with a two-run single to give Houston a one-run lead. The Nationals won the game 4-3, so it all worked out for Frandsen. Not that everyone was buying his story about not practicing the behind-the-back special:

Frandsen wouldn't cave, though.
