Before the season began, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier made a joke about people throwing eggs at the newly erected 85-foot banner featuring his likeness the university installed in front of Williams-Brice Stadium.
“That could happen,” Spurrier said of the eggs. “If we go bad, that could happen as we all know.”
After Kentucky's unexpected 42-35 win against the Gamecocks on Saturday, South Carolina better invest in some heavy duty power washers.
South Carolina quarterback Dylan Thompson threw a pick-six with 2:29 remaining to give the Wildcats the win. Defensive end Alvin Dupree snatched the ball out of the air off a deflection and ran it back six yards for the score.
After trailing 38-24 early in the fourth quarter, Kentucky stormed back to score three consecutive touchdowns. Running back Jojo Kemp had two of those scores with runs of 1 and 5 yards.
South Carolina was the preseason favorite to win what has now become a wide-open SEC East. Saturday’s loss marks the first time the Gamecocks have lost three games since losing five in 2010.
Kentucky, however, is 4-1 and has won as many games this year as it won in the past two seasons combined. The Wildcats haven’t started 4-1 since 2008. However, they finished that season 7-6.
“You all watched it, we’re not a great team. We know that,” Spurrier said following the game. “I told the guys we’re going to try and have a winning season somehow. And we’ve got to do some work to do that. So, we’ll obviously try to make some changes somewhere. I don’t know exactly where, but we’ve got to do something different.”
