Vancouver Canucks right wing Jannik Hansen was one of the 2017 NHL trade deadline’s most intriguing names.
He’s fast. He’s versatile. He’s solid defensively, but popped for 22 goals last season. He’s signed for $2.5 million next season.
And now he’s a San Jose Shark.

Late Tuesday night, the San Jose Sharks traded left wing Nikolay Goldobin and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2017 for Hansen, who was a healthy scratch for the Canucks against the Red Wings. Hansen, who has battled injuries this season, has six goals and seven assists in 28 games.
From the Canucks:
“Nikolay is a gifted offensive player with good hands and good release on his shot,” said General Manager Jim Benning. “His play away from the puck has improved this year in the American League and we believe with his skillset and continued development, he has the ability to become a valuable member of our team.”
“Jannik has been an important part of our team for over a decade and we would like to thank him, his wife Karen and their children for all they’ve done and wish them all the best in San Jose,” continued Benning. “While this was a difficult decision to make, this trade helps us with our goal of continuing to build a younger, skilled team for the future.”
Goldobin, 21, appeared in 46 games for the San Jose Barracuda this season, recorded 41 points (15-26-41) and ranked third on the team in scoring. Goldobin was originally selected 27th overall in the first round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks.
Here are the conditions on the pick:
If SJ wins the Cup, the conditional fourth round pick becomes a first-round pick for the Canucks. 4th round or 1st round, no in between.

Yeah, if Hansen helps the Sharks win the Cup, we don’t think they’ll give a flying [expletive] about that first-round pick …
This is a great move for the Sharks. Hansen can play anywhere in the lineup – the top line all the way down to being an effective checking-liner. Whether he’s in the plans for next season or expansion draft bait – the Sharks have some defensemen they don’t want to lose – it’s a solid addition for a Cup contender.
And this is a great move for the Canucks! Seriously! Goldobin has some serious upside, although he needs to refine his game for the NHL level. So Canucks GM Jim Benning has added two solid prospects – Jonathan Dahlen, acquired for Alex Burrows, and now Goldobin – as a deadline seller. Can he continue the frugal streak with Ryan Miller before the deadline?
On The Milbury Scale:

TWO MILBURYS
We define this as “a trade that could, down the road, burn one team in a big way.” So if Goldobin becomes an all-star and the Canucks pull another good player with a first-round pick, that could fit the description. Of course, like we said, that would mean a San Jose Stanley Cup, and they’re not going to care.
