The invincible Madison Bumgarner, postseason demigod? Not on Monday night — and Jake Arrieta, of all people, proved it in Game 3 of the National League Division Series in San Francisco.
Arrieta, the Chicago Cubs’ starting pitcher, shocked AT&T Park and whipped the Cubs dugout into a joyous frenzy when he blasted a three-run homer off Bumgarner in the second inning.
Not only did this put the Cubs up 3-0 in a potential clincher, this pitcher-on-pitcher long ball ended Bumgarner’s 24 2/3-inning scoreless streak, which was one out away from tying Curt Schilling for the second-longest postseason scoreless streak of all time.

(Getty Images) You have to admit there’s at least something about poetic about Bumgarner’s streak ending off the bat of Arrieta — since the two of them are among the best hitting pitchers in MLB. Add this to Travis Wood’s homer from Game 2, and the Cubs pitching staff has out-homered the Giants in the series.
Give credit to the Cubs fan in left field who caught the ball too. He was surrounded by a sea of Giants fans and made a nice catch.

The Cubs dugout, meanwhile, went absolutely nuts. Especially Anthony Rizzo.

The homer looked like it might be enough for the Cubs to clinch the series, but the Giants roared back in the eighth inning and eventually won 6-5 in extra innings. That sets up a Game 4 on Tuesday, with the chance for more Cubs pitchers to homer.
