Rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs recently expressed his interest in purchasing an NFL team. However, it appears he may have to get in line behind Jon Bon Jovi when it comes to entertainers looking to purchase a professional football team.
According to CBS Sports reporter Jason La Canfora, Bon Jovi is strategically aligning himself to become one of the candidates to purchase the Buffalo Bills after owner Ralph Wilson dies. The natural assumption is the Rogers Communications group based in Toronto might be the prime suitor to buy the Bills, mainly because they help stage NFL games annually in Toronto. La Canfora said, “Bon Jovi has spent considerable time in the area getting to know politicians and power brokers and even added a date there late in a recent tour to allow for more time to allocate to the matter.”
Here is a portion of La Confora’s story:
“Bon Jovi has been very proactive in meeting NFL owners and general managers, and is seeking their input on all sort of issues related to football. In the past he has nearly become a minority owner of a team, most notably the Falcons. However, sources said Bon Jovi is aiming to be the principal owner -- it remains to be seen if he has the type of immense capital necessary to meet that threshold of ownership -- and has aligned himself with several powerbrokers in his effort to turn his dream into reality.”
Counting down the days to Wilson’s death is definitely morbid. This story sounds similar to some family members looking forward to an inheritance after their parents or grandparents die.
However, it will be interesting to track Bon Jovi’s pursuit of an NFL team (he once was a co-owner of the Arena Football League's Philadelphia Soul), and if he decides to form an ownership group or make it a solo effort. The Rogers Communications group is an international media company worth billions that owns a nationwide sports media network in Canada and has a stadium in downtown Toronto. Considering they already have NFL ties, it would be an easy ownership transition.

All this being said, there is one important fact that cannot be ignored: Wilson is alive, which makes the speculation interesting, but nothing more than conjecture.
