One of the big concerns with Major League Baseball mandating the installation of metal detectors all every stadium beginning in 2015 is how it will impact fans getting into the stadium in a timely manner.
Those concerns certainly won't be quieted after Saturday. Not after a full security screening at Miller Park in Milwaukee — which would probably be considered a test run — produced long lines outside the stadium, and even led to the start of the game being delayed 15 minutes to accommodate fans who were still waiting as the scheduled start time neared.

That's obviously problematic, though with a pushed up Saturday start of 6:05 locally it's not as big of a deal as delaying a weeknight 7:05 game.
Another factor on Saturday is that the enhanced security screening coincided with Hank the Dog's bobblehead night. That's a hot ticket around Milwaukee, which led to a sellout crowd of 45,205. Also, as noted by Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, many of those fans were tailgating before the game, which led to a last-minute rush of foot traffic outside the park.

It was a perfect storm that created less than ideal circumstances. That said, fans will have to get used to those circumstances becoming a regular part of the ballpark experience in 2015.
If there's an upside to it happening Saturday night in Milwaukee, it's that fans can use it as a reference point and a reminder to budget more time when heading to the stadium. By the same token, all 30 teams and those in charge of MLB security can review what happened and look for ways to tweak the system to smooth it out.
It won't be perfect right away, nobody expects that. But that doesn't mean patience won't wear thin when those lines build up. Even if it's something as simple as opening the gates sooner, particularly on nights when large crowds are anticipated, then they'll be lessening the chance for future headaches and unnecessary delays.
