Well this one came out of nowhere.
A week after deciding to transfer from Texas A&M, freshman quarterback Kyler Murray has signed a financial aid agreement with Oklahoma. The Sooners announced the news on Thursday, saying that Murray will join the program “starting with the 2016 spring semester.”
“We’re very happy to welcome Kyler to our program and we look forward to working with him,” said Sooners head coach Bob Stoops.
Murray was the National Gatorade Football Player of the Year as a high school senior out of Allen High School in Allen, Texas. Rivals rated Murray as a four-star recruit in the 2015 class and No. 71 overall nationally.*
He began the season as the Aggies’ backup behind Kyle Allen (who also transferred), but moved up the depth chart and made three starts later in the season. Overall this season, Murray threw for 686 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 59.5 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 335 yards and a score.
Murray was slated to start for the Aggies in the Dec. 30 Holiday Bowl, but opted to transfer after a meeting with A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. With Murray and Allen out of the picture, junior college transfer Jake Hubenak will start for A&M.
At Oklahoma, Murray will redshirt the 2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules and could be in line to start in 2017 after Baker Mayfield runs out of eligibility.
