That did not go well for the U.S.
Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson cruised in the opening fourballs match of the 2014 Ryder Cup, defeating Webb Simpson and Bubba Watson by a 5-and-4 margin.*
The Americans failed to win a single hole in the match, largely because they failed to make a single birdie on either ball. Combined, Watson and Simpson were 1 over in the 14-hole match -- a disaster in the format.
Watson and Simpson, who went 2-1 together as a team in the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah, will likely sit out the afternoon session after struggling so much in the morning. It wouldn't be surprising if Simpson, one of captain Tom Watson's three wild-card picks, is relegated to the bench until Sunday, when all 12 players are forced to compete in individual matches.
