No good deed goes unpunished in the case of Switzerland’s Dario Cologna, whose ski broke in the last kilometer of the men’s 50-kilometer men’s mass start in Sochi on Sunday. Cologna already won two gold medals in Sochi, and though considered a threat in this event, as well, he ended up coming in* 27th place because of the equipment debacle.

The 27-year-old made headlines earlier in the Games when he won gold in the 15-kilometer cross-country event but waited 28 minutes to shake hands with the skier who came in last, Roberto Carcelen of Peru. Cologna also won gold in the men's 30-kilometer skiathlon event.
The Russians ended up sweeping the podium on Sunday's event, with Alexander Legkov taking home gold with a time of 1:46:55.2. Maxim Vylegzhanin earned silver, coming in less than a second later, and Ilia Chernousov took home bronze.

Cologna's ski isn't the first to break in Sochi. Russian athlete Anton Gafarov had a broken ski during the men's sprint free semifinals, and Canadian coach Justin Wadsworth won the hearts of Olympic watchers earlier in the Games when he ran out onto the track to help Gafarov replace it and finish the race “with dignity."
