will my sony ericsson k850i not work on at&T?

when I when to the AT&T store to buy a sim card for my phone, the sales guy told me "sorry you can only make calls on this phone because its a european phone" I bought it at best buy. I live in the California. So will this phone work and will I be able to use all of the features? ie internet, messanging, etc.
