Sony Ericsson Media Manager???

I have a Sony Ericsson and I just recently downloaded Sony Ericsson Media Player to help me manage music but it won't find my phone. I have tried pluging it in many times but it will still say connect phone to PC and activate the USB connection to phone. I not using the phone cord that came with my phone but with my dads, he has the same phone. what do i do????
