First IE window doesn't work, just says "connecting." Second or third

fine. Any idea what could cause this? I use Firefox primarily, but have to test things in IE occasionally. For whatever reason, when I open IE, at least half the time I get a white screen that says "connecting," but never actually does. If I try to stop it and hit another site (google or Yahoo), it keeps saying "Connecting." If I go ahead and click the icon in my quick launch bar to open it again, just leaving the original one open with the white screen, the second window starts normally--usually. Sometimes I get the same white screen as the first 3 or 4 more times before I get a working window. The windows that didn't work at first never do. I can't seem to do anything to get them to work.

I have no clue what is causing this. It's really just an annoyance. Couldn't find anything on here, but I'm not even sure what I'm searching for.

OS: Windows XP Pro
Problem browser: problem was occurring in IE7, and does still occur now after I upgraded to IE8 yesterday. Problem not present at all in Firefox.
Other major programs: I use AVG Network for virus protection.
Start page is an internal IP address that is definitely good. Changing to Google or Yahoo doesn't help.

I get the same problem on several of my home and work computers but I have not yet figured it out. The problem seems to be only with internet explorer. When it happens, you cannot even connect to the router or any other web-based functions on the network. I too also use AVG Network for virus protection...so I suppose it could possibly be the problem as well somehow.

Hammer2 I'm having the same problem too.

I've seen some posts that attribute this to the AVG LinkScanner that showed up in AVG version 8. I upgraded to IE8 to make sure i was on the latest version. Next I disabled the AVG LinkScanner using these steps: AVG Free - FAQ. I no longer get the green checkmarks next to links, but I still have the problem with some pages never opening.

The next step will be to remove AVG and try Avast.

I am using Avira antivirus on that computer... so it is not an AVG thing.

I have come across this same issue.
4 PC's on the network.
All different setups. All have different AV.
One has AVG.
The same thing happens on IE and Firefox often on all PC's where the browser gets stuck displaying "Connecting to ..." some IP address, then open another browser window and it works straight away.
Network is using a Netgear Cable router with WiFi.
There is a network printer on the LAN as well.
I am thinking there is some general LAN issue here or one of the PC's is affecting DNS or something to that affect.
Any suggestions or further information from anyone would be great.

Same thing here

Using AVG anti virus
I have to open 5 to six windows to get one that works.
I upgraded to IE 8 then went back to 7.
I did not see this problem until going to IE 8 but I am not sure when exactly it started.
