Can I save files from my hard-drive if I can't get windows to run?

My other computer crashed somehow, well windows did. But I have alotttttt of important things on there and I really dont wanna reinstall windows and lose all those documentz. Is there anything I can do to save them? My bf told me to get an IDE or SATA cable but the guy at Best Buy told me it wont work if windows isnt working on the other comp, helpppppppppppp!!!!!
