Why might you view the lithosphere and the asthenosphere as "solid

pieces of pavement resting on hot tar"? It's something i need to knw for Earth and Enviromental Science class

The lithosphere is the crust and solid layer of the mantle, or the "pavement" and the plasticky, (think old gum) lower layer of the mantle, the asthenosphere, could be compared to hot tar.

The lithosphere is light and so floats on the heaver basalt of which most is liquid to semi rigid - like asphalt...
