Why are cigarettes filter-end up in the pack?

If you haven't washed your hands recently, it's kind of gross to grab a cigarette by the filter and then put it between your lips. Why are they placed filter up?

I don't see the reason as to it being because the filter may get squashed in the packaging process as I have never run across a cig that had the paper end damaged prior to use.

Anybody have any ideas? And please don't give me a "quit smoking" spiel. I'm tryin'.

Easier access.
It's a promote kindof thing. If you're offering someone a cig they probably don't want your hand touching it. Or you just open pull light. not open pull flip light.

In the days of the soft package with the tear top, you could use an up throw method an one or two would pop up and you would draw id out with your lips.
When you do have dirty hands, you can still shake them forward so you can use your lips.

I would guess for easier grip and for the harder side up so you don't damage you cigarette. It might also be for those would pack it against their hand to tighten the tobacco.

you're so right. why would you be handling something, and putting it in your mouth, without washing your hands? makes no sense when there are sinks and soap available everywhere.
