addition to all the points that people brought up there was also a story from the original Greek Olympics where the athletes wanted wrestling first, pankration(Greek MMA of the time) second, and boxing last. They reasoned that wrestling was the safest and boxing was the most dangerous, and this was coming from the men that competed in all those sports.

It's really like they put wrestling and boxing together. we know wrestling is safe enough for (sissy) board of ed to approve, and adding a safe sport like wrestling to boxing couldn't really make the sport any more dangerous than it had been. (it could only make it safer)

Next time they say something is TOO violent, tell them to turn on the evening news, open a newspaper, go to the movies, look at other events like WWE or the greatest American pasttime - football. Or what about boxing? Two men forced to stand up and exchange punches to the head isn't violent? Two football players colliding into one another at bone-crunching speeds isn't considered violent? How about a stock racing car crash? Why do violent stories always seem to grab the attention of us during the news? Why is it that whenever there is an accident, people gather around the site to look? Why are we so fascinated by so-called "reality" TV? It's called realism for a reason.

I don't know what is considered "too" violent. Is there such a thing as "not-too" violent that is acceptable? What about "mildly" violent? Why are other "violent" things ok but MMA is "too" violent. They don't seem to realize our very society, our human nature and the fabric of mankind is rooted with violence. If there was no violence there'd be no US of A and we wouldn't be sitting here enjoying our luxuries and freedoms and typing on our little keyboards. While true violence and evil lurks in the world slaughtering and scheming against us, we'd be a nation of soft pushovers. Complete wusses. Our borders would be defenseless, our soldiers about as useless as solar powered flashlights.

To deny violence is to deny human nature. It's as much a part of us as we are of it. Violence is important and it plays as much a role in our lives as good and benevolence does.

You could always argue that mma is no more violent than other sports.

In boxing they punch each other repeatedly to the head for 10 rounds which can lead to brain damage, while in mma since they wear smaller gloves one good punch can end the fight. This might seem more violent, but the repeated impacts of boxing cause much more long-term damage than mma.

In hockey, fighting is an accepted part of the sport, but in hockey they are fighting out of anger, while in mma there are no bad feelings between the competitors.

If football, which is played in every high school in America, the goal is hit the ball carrier as hard as possible, running into him at him full speed and slamming your full weight into him. That's pretty violent! High school students also compete in wrestling, where people are routinely slammed to mat very "violently." If these sports aren't too violent for kids, than mma is not too violent for adults.

You could also talk about all the safety rules in place in the UFC, and how many of the wins come by submission, which 99% of the time does not result in any injury.

All that being said, of course it's violent! It's two guys in a cage fighting! But should it be banned? No.

mma is a good sport but u cant really compare it top boxing and say boxing is more dangerous because in boxing they only allowed to use there arms and their fists do have padding, but no doubt it causes brain damage, look at mma they are alowed to hit each other with the elbows the knee each other straight in the face and kick ech other aswell and their elbows, knees, shins and feet are unprotected with no pads 1 good hit with those parts could end someones life, but i still enjoy the sport and i have started doing mma lol

The UFC and the rest of MMA organizations is safer than Boxing. If you get knocked out in MMA, you lose and thats it. If you get knocked out in boxing you have a count to 10 to recover from your knock out and fight again. THis can happen over and over again so long as the boxer is still able to fight. This causes boxers to be prone to EXTREMELY unsafe amounts of brain trauma.

Fact: No one has died in the UFC or any other MMA event. Several boxers have died in professional boxing events.

Nobody has died in UFC, but two people have died in MMA events.

"While competition in the MMA is occasionally depicted as brutal by the media,[43] there have only been two documented cases of deaths after a sanctioned MMA event.[44] The first was the death of Sam Vasquez on November 30, 2007.[45] Vasquez collapsed shortly after being knocked out by Vince Libardi in the third round of an October 20, 2007 fight at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.[46] Vasquez had two separate surgeries to remove blood clots from his brain, and shortly after the second operation suffered a major stroke and never regained consciousness.[45] While questions have been asked about Vasquez's health before his final bout, no firm indications of pre-existing problems have yet surfaced. The second death stemming from a sanctioned mixed martial arts contest happened in South Carolina on June 28, 2010, when 30-year old Michael Kirkham was knocked out and never regained consciousness. He was pronounced dead two days after the fight.[47]"

Though there have been these two deaths in sanctioned MMA competitions, all of the big Mixed Martial Arts promotions (UFC, Strikeforce, Pride, Dream, Bellator, etc.) have never had anyone die.
