Well, they were forced into enslavement against their will. Most slaves were captured by other tribes and sold to the colonists by the tribal leaders. The reason why the European's were able to conquer the Americas and Africa was because they had superior technology.

Slave were the undesirable of the tribe and were sold for trinkets! So I guess in a way we are like Australia.

Aproximately 500,000 Africans were sent to what is now the USA most were prisoners of War sold to the Portuguese.

Europe had a 2000 year history of servitude and serfdom Forcing people to work for the Elite ruling class was their way of life.

I think it was easier for 17 Century Overlords to utilize African labor than to fight and subjugate indigenous Native Americans.

Nothing has really changed since then. Free resources and cheep labor is still the Corporate Dream. The only difference is transportation makes it easier to move the industry to the Resources and Labor.

The same restraints exist today preventing sweat-shop children from freeing themselves that prevented the African labor force from freedom. Fear, lack of information and dependency.

How could they stop themselves from being enslaved? They were seriously flogged and tortured for escaping! The white man had no business doing what they did to them and all in the name of religion! BTW - the Bible thumpers are still very racist to them so I do not blame them for being mad.
