What is the difference between Xvid and H264?

h264 is higher quality suited for 1080p (hi def content) while having larger file size.. it is not compressed much therefore better sound and video quality overall


xvid could also be encoded into 1080p (hi def content) but will lack some quality because of its compression but the sound and video quality shouldn't be too bad.

i'd probably wouldn't see the difference but if you're viewing a video on a HDTV 27 inch + i'd recommend h264

I prefer xvid, if you know what your doing, you can get encodes that look almost as good as dvd and still fit the whole movie on a single cd. Also every stand-alone player I have had will play xvid.. not so lucky with H264. I also like the fact that xvid is open-source, although I'm not sure if H264 is or not. For short, xvid works great for me as far as quality and compatibility I see no reason to use anything else.
