What happens if I just press the brake on a Manual Transmission?

On a manual transmission when already moving at a considerable speed, lets say 15 mpg and above, what happens if you just press the brakes without pressing in the clutch??? and would you recommend doing this???

You will have to restart the engine and it is hard on brakes because they are working against the engine power.
