There are so many things to do in Chicago! Especially in the summer. Chicago has Navy Pier, Millenium Park, the Sears Tower, White Sox and Cubs games, fun museums, and many more things. Since you want to go in the summer you could go swim at Lake Michigan.

Maybe your mom is talking about some suburbs that are kind of dangerous. I don't think visitors ever see or visit those suburbs. It's safe downtown.
