can i use my orange sim card in an o2 pay as you go phone?

I am on an orange contract but want a new phone as i dont like the one i have - i have found on for £200 on o2 or £300 sim free (id rather save the £100 ) can i use my oraneg sim card in this phone or will it have to be unlocked?
